so i just got a call from atelka (contact centre) and they really want me, i am just what they are looking for--maturity, experience, blah blah blah. i told the nice lady i was seeking remote agent work, not office work. i need to work from home. so she asks me if it is OK if she asks why i cannot put myself into an office. so i am very honest, and calm( because this topic really gets my blood pressure up), and begin the reason why----scent issues. i am very allergic to chemicals that are found in after shaves, perfumes, colognes, cleaning products, etc, and i need to be very sure that i am not exposed to such things, otherwise bad things occur with my health. further to that is the office politics around this. you see, i am the one who is always 'in the wrong', i am made to feel that it is my fault. every other call centre i have ever worked in has held a scent reduced policy, on paper, but never follow through with enforcing it. however, i have always had to end up leaving work, losing time and money, made to feel like i was less than the rest of my co workers, blacklisted as a trouble maker, and made to 'make up the time lost' because i was sick. um, hello??? WTF??? i would not have been sick were it not for someone else's blatant disregard for another 's health. the stress of this put me off work for over a year, thank you very much. i did not say all of this, but my mind is racing at the moment ... oh and she says when i am done... we don't even have a 'scent reduced policy in place for our employees, and we are not set up for home agents at this time'.
it is not that i choose NOT to work, it is that i am NOT able to work in that environment. hell, i can learn any system you throw my way, give me the proper training and guidance and leadership and i will be your best agent. i just can't do it in an office, around other people. call me a social retard if you will, but this is my health we are discussing, and i can't do it.
further, i have a real hard time going to stores, shops, public places of any type, for the fear of being 'scented'. yes i know i should not barricade myself in my home on the off chance i might get sick. sorry, have had some really bad experiences with being sick, like for 8 months with pneumonia. no thanks. it ages you. and another thing since i am on a roll here, every time a person gets sick it takes less to get sick the next time. i have a valid reason for staying away, and this is the way it is.
i miss working with others, i enjoy talking with people, but sorry i can't do it. dr.s orders, and i have to follow those so i can live to see old age. it took me a while to accept that this is the way it is, because, although shy at first, i can be quite social. i miss people.
i am hoping that by speaking up, things will change. i have not seen much in the way of change in a call centre tho, and doubt highly that i ever will. just let me be the best agent i can be (from home--my safe haven-- and all will be right with the world.
I hear ya. People can be VERY ignorant when it comes to scent. If they don't suffer from it, it don't exist. Makes me sick! Like you, I have very strong feelings on this matter. When we go somewhere and there is strong scent I always speak up and say something like, "Why do people wear such strong scent??!!??" I know they hear me and I've gotten dirty looks for saying it. Don't get me started on the hospital....
ReplyDeleteThat's incredibly frustrating. I wish businesses could be more flexible.
ReplyDeleteI feel so bad for you! That sounds awful. Well, just so you know, I don't wear any perfume ever, so it would be a real treat working with me in an office. *hee hee*
ReplyDeleteIf you don't speak up no one will hear you so keep shouting
