In a week it will all be over....

all of the hustle and bustle for one day. the shopping is done. the tree will go up tomorrow, and we'll wrap the gifts this week, and then, saturday will be the feast. and then it will be all done, til next year.
my work is closed from 23rd - 28th, so vacation for me (not paid).
i'm sure it will be a lovely christmas. this will be our 6th christmas in our home :) everyone is healthy and doing ok so that is a blessing.
we don't put up a lot of decorations (the kitties have enough fun with the tree).
i am remembering christmas's of long ago. when i was little, i looked forward to christmas. i remember some very happy times. sitting in the living room on christmas eve, mom in her favorite chair, dad on the couch, a fire crackling in the fireplace, it was peaceful. the family was together and it was a happy time.
i have some snapshot memories of christmas dinners, dad carving the turkey at the table, a beautiful spread of mom's hard work in the kitchen that day. home made rolls, perfectly browned and fresh from the oven to go with the feast.  mom used to make a fantastic lemon meringue pie, in fact, lemon pies never seemed to be the same way mom made them. hers were not tart at all, just lemony and sweet, with the flakiest pie crust. the turkey was always most and delicious. mom always stuffed her bird....wait, let's rephrase that, the turkey was stuffed before cooking.  it was always perfect. the 'good china' and the silver would be out in full force, and i got to drink my orange juice in the 'special glasses' with the fancy designs on the side.
santa was always very good to me, because i was a good girl all year (uh huh, let's go with that). dolls and clothes crayons and colouring books. my favorite big toys were the beige bouncy horse,

it had wheels and if you bounced up and down on it you could go for 'miles' in the house :) and then there was the little red pedal car. once i  figured out how to make it go, there was no stopping me. i used to drag race the milk man once a week. :) i would drive all around the neighbourhood, back in the day it was safe to do that. i was not quite 4 then.

as i got older, my taste in toys obviously changed. one year i got a little purple transistor radio with in AM & FM. it was from Radio Shack called Realistic brand. and on new years eve when CFRA was doing their countdown of the 100 best songs of 1974, i was tuned in, under my covers with the little plastic ear bud crammed in so i could hear.

remember the Cryssie doll? she had a green 'velvet' dress and long red hair, i can't remember how you made it short, but if you pushed her belly button in you could pull a pony tail and make her long haired.

oh and lets not forget the Easy Bake Oven, not that fancy one they have now. mine was a light green with the lightbulb in it, and it looked like a 70s model stove. amazing that a 60 watt bulb could cook cakes. :) fabulous.

one year barbie made her appearance.

though i was always more fond of the matchbox cars. hot wheels tracks, the orange ones, with the red or blue tabs to put them together, and a case that when opened was a city. awesome memories.

maybe it will be ok after the kids have kids, then i can be a kid again, but for now, i have my wonderful childhood memories.
Make today GREAT~ poet.
ps- images are off google so that must mean it is ok to use them:)

  2. Oh I wanted the Easy Bake Oven sooooo badly when I was a kid. Asked Santa every year for one and never got one. Pretty much eroded my faith in the old guy lol......

  3. Chrissy had a little crank wheel in her back to wind the hair back into her head. I had one too. :D

I also had Tiffany/Tuesday Taylor that when you twisted the top of her head she would have either blonde and brunette hair. Fun stuff.

  4. Great tribute, Poet! Ahh yes, Christmases are among the few good memories from my childhood! I am grateful to my mother for that! Unfortunately, my present Christmases are hurtful with my family of origin, and I have to choose to be estranged from them.
But Christmases with my own little family are very happy and blessed!

    Hugs, Judy

  6. Oh my gosh, I forgot all about that Barbie Camper!! *grin*

My older sisters had it, and passed it down to me. I LOVED that camper and played with my Barbie's & it for hours and hours...

The only weird thing was that for some reason, someone wrote "REAR" on the side of the camper. It was probably one of my older brothers. *hee hee*

  7. rmcintyre- i was born in ottawa, and lived there until 1978. it will always be my hometown. even though you can never go back, i go back in my mind.
i always preferred the cars to the barbie stuff. i would play in the side yard with my cars under the honeysuckle tree, building roads, and taking great trips to the beyond. barbie could never do that. :)

  8. What memories! My sister had an Easy Bake Oven. I got in trouble for melting those fat crayons in it.

I had the Barbie camper. I still have it somewhere in a box. I got hours of play out of that thing.

And oh, the fun we had with the HotWheels cars. When we weren't racing them on those orange tracks, we were beating each other with the tracks. They packed a nasty sting!

  9. We moved here to Ottawa in 72 . Hubby was transferred with Rev Can from London, Ont. We are in the west end out towards Manotick. We call Ottawa home but he is originally from Cape Breton.
